Urology

Mayflower Healthcare Alliance; delivering excellence in healthcare

Urological conditions account for around 30% of all GP and acute hospital referrals in the UK.

Clinicians at Mayflower Healthcare Alliance are able to diagnose and treat problems of the urinary system, disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.

If you are struggling with urological problems, our expert team of clinicians can diagnose your condition and discuss the most effective management approach. Should your GP suspect a urological concern, they can refer you to us, where you will be assessed and treated by our experienced urology clinicians.

How it works...

1. Initial Appointment

All patients referred to us will be allocated an initial appointment, where your clinician will diagnose your condition and determine the  most effective course of treatment.

Before being referred to the Community Clinics for Urology, you will have discussed treatment of your condition with your GP. Once you have been referred to us, you will be invited to come to one of our clinics. All appointments will be confirmed in a letter or appointment card with date, time and any additional information required.

You will receive a full consultation with an experienced Clinician upon invitation via appointment card or letter. This will include the diagnosis of the underlying condition and the subsequent management and treatment.

When visiting us, please bring along with you:

  1. Your appointment letter or appointment card

  2. A list of any questions you would like to ask

Your first full consultation is typically 20 minutes and the Clinician will advise on whether any procedures are required or follow up appointments to monitor progress and the appropriate frequency.

Where appropriate, the treatment process could then continue with a follow up appointment and in some cases a minor procedure.

You will be advised at the initial appointment when you will need to re-visit the clinic and an appointment. You will also be given an appointment card or you will be sent an appointment letter in the post.

At MHA, we provide a full range of dermatology minor operative procedures, including cryotherapy and biopsies, delivered in a safe and professional clinical setting.

If a flexible cystoscopy is the best course of action your clinician will discuss this with you in advance of the procedure.

Flexible cystoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to examine the inside of your bladder, this is normally carried out under local anesthetic. The procedure usually takes no more than a few minutes to complete.

We will send you a patient information leaflet about your procedure from The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) through the post or via email along with a procedure consent form for you to read and digest before your appointment.  We request you bring this along to your appointment along with any questions you may have.

The link below will redirect you to the leaflet you should read prior to the procedure:

If we find an abnormality inside your bladder, your clinician may take a biopsy using a small pair of forceps passed through the telescope.  If a biopsy is the best course of action your clinician will discuss this with you.

Ultrasound (also called ultrasonography, or a sonogram) uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images.

It’s a simple, flexible and painless way for urologists to look at many organs without using dyes or radiation. An ultrasound is painless, safe and often risk-free.

Our clinicians use ultrasound to look at the kidneys, bladder and testicles. These exams help check what is causing you:

  • pain,

  • swelling,

  • or an infection.
